Hi Pies

I get all up in your mind like a psychologist

Heat-free wavy hair again!

with 20 comments

I cannot resist wavy hair on anyone, especially me :) And the truth is that my fantastic collection of hot tools (conical iron, three curling irons, hot rollers, triple-barrel waver, etc.) has the potential to fry the sexy out my hair.

As a consequence, I am on the eternal (I guess) quest to find low- or no-heat methods to create waves. Last month or the month before or earlier I got really into model off-duty hair. It works but I’ve moved on.

There is another technique that involves weaving hair into a stretchy headband, resulting in a temporary Julius Caesar head wreath effect! Et tu Brute? After wearing this fashionable style for a few hours (overnight I beg you), remove the headband and say good morning to CASCADING WAVES!

To do:

1. Purchase headbands like these.’

300

I recommend you stretch them out on something much bigger than your head for a fewer hours to avoid a headache.

2. Watch this tutorial on YouTube, if only for her charming Austrian accent :)

3. Follow her instructions. She gives suggestions on how to make your waves tight or loose.

4. Wake up a lionness!

This technique requires major refining on my end, but I am determined to make it work and remain obsessed for a few weeks until something else comes along :)

  1. I saw the vid for this a few days ago and am dying to try it!

Headbands are a pain though + I strug. at wearing them for more than 3 hrs. Maybe loosening them up would help.

    your hair looks beautiful!

    • Thanks :) I put the headband around my laptop screen for an entire day. Then I slept with it on, so if I had a headache I didn’t really notice! xo

  3. Hi Lovely Lady Locks,

When I was searching for a heat-free wave/curl method, my Grandmother told me about what they used to do in the old days…before hairspray and modern-day curling irons….the phenomenon of Pin Curls! I think it might be easier and less ouchy than the head band method, but you can decide for yourself. Here’s a video on youtube:

Basically, you just roll your hair around your fingers and pin. It seems daunting at first, but you’ll get the hang of it fast. My Grandma did this every night before going to sleep back in the 40′s & 50′s, and she was so good at it she would do it in the dorm in a matter of minutes after “lights out”. I actually don’t start rolling at the bottom of the hair like in this video, but roll from the top because I find it is easier. You can adjust the size of your waves by how many fingers you wrap your hair around, and I usually start with my hair wet, curl, hairspray, and then put a scarf over the pin curls while I sleep. The next morning, I brush out the curls so they look more natural. I think I have some pics and I’ll post them when I find them.

  5. Am blessed with rebellious curls and am forever straightening my hair to get rid of them, but I hear that curls are back big time in 2012.

  9. Fortunately, I can get heat free waves whenever I want – the perk of naturally unruly…er, curly hair. That being said, it doesn’t always behave in the way I want, so I may just have to take a look at this technique.

Also, please come visit and be my personal stylist for a week.

  10. I love that you call it “model off duty.” I always used to call certain outfits my “celebrity on a weekend” looks, until I started to realize that celebrities probably work on the weekends, so I like your phrase better ;) PS You are gorg.

  14. I tried it this weekend and it turned out great, and it was so fast and easy! And it was actually very comfortable to sleep in because my hair wasn’t in the way. The curls were pretty tight at first, so next time I’ll use bigger sections, but even day 2 I have nice beautiful waves.
